QUESTIONS ABOUT OUR CAVIAR
IS THIS REALLY CAVIAR?
Yes. Our products are made from the yastyk, the sac that holds the sturgeon’s roe. Caviar kept whole in its yastyk, yastychnaya, is a recognised caviar type, described by the UN’s FAO and covered by its own food standard. It is not the sieved grain caviar you eat from a tin, and we never claim it is.
HOW MUCH CAVIAR IS IN YOUR PRODUCTS?
All of it. Our oil is caviar oil with only vitamin E added to keep it fresh, and our extracts are 100% caviar extract. A 100 ml bottle holds the oil of about half a kilo of caviar. And because caviar itself is about half water, and we take the water out, ours is roughly twice as concentrated as the caviar you eat from the tin.
HOW IS THIS DIFFERENT FROM CAVIAR EXTRACT IN OTHER BRANDS?
In most caviar skincare, caviar extract is one ingredient among 30 to 60, often listed below the 1% line, and that extract is itself mostly water and glycol. Ours is the caviar itself, at full strength.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FOOD AND COSMETIC GRADE?
The same caviar, made, tested and labelled to two standards: cosmetic grade to wear on skin and hair, food grade to eat. Choose by how you will use it.
WHERE DO THE STURGEON COME FROM?
From sturgeon farms in the European Union. We use no wild fish and nothing from Russia. The oil is extracted and refined in the Netherlands.
IS ANY FISH FARMED OR KILLED FOR YOUR PRODUCTS?
No. We use the yastyk that remains after the caviar has been harvested and made.
CAN I TAKE THE PURE CAVIAR OIL BY MOUTH?
Only the food-grade version. Our cosmetic-grade caviar oil is for skin and hair. Our food-grade caviar oil is the same caviar oil, made and labelled as food, to take by the teaspoon.
WHAT DOES “PATENTED” COVER?
The process and the caviar oil, under EP 3 291 682, US 11,197,490 and JP 6496972. Our protein extracts are not patented.
DOES IT SMELL OF FISH?
The oil is refined to be mild, with very little scent.
HOW SHOULD I STORE IT?
The oil: keep it in the fridge after opening, like caviar, and out of direct light. The extracts: keep the jar cool and dry with the lid closed, and always use a dry spoon. Not the fridge: a cold jar opened in a warm room draws moisture onto the powder. The best-before date is on the pack.
IS IT SUITABLE FOR SENSITIVE SKIN?
Patch-test on the inner arm 24 hours before first use.
DO YOU SHIP OUTSIDE THE UK AND EU?
Not yet. Sturgeon products need CITES permits to cross borders, and we only ship where those are in place. Join the list to hear when we reach the US.
CAN I TRACE MY BOTTLE?
Yes. Every lot is tested by an accredited laboratory and linked to its farm and processing lot numbers.
